The tags that sell plants - The birth of an industry

It all started in 1949 when Harry Weesies, a plant grower and Lou Schmidt, an entrepreneur who was making plastic fishing bobbers, met in the basement of his hardware store. At this time plant tags were primarily wooden stakes that could be written on with pencil. When Harry asked Lou if he could use his knowledge of plastic injection molding to create a plant tag, what is now known as Master Tag was born.

Today, as a 4th generation family business, with over 140 employees, MasterTag is 100% dedicated to the horticultural industry and committed to providing growers and retailers with high quality consumer focused plant tags. Every MasterTag plant tag is designed to help consumers make their buying decisions and can include plant care instructions, interactive digital integration technology and more.

Our 70 years of experience and extensive consumer research has taught us how to create tags that help consumers make their buying decisions.
